It’s come to my attention that a few of my posts have abnormally high notes, although when clicking to see who reblogged/liked etc. there are only one or two people listed.

As I now have some, ahem, unsavoury links on my internet history, can I please advise you all to NOT CLICK ON ANY TUMBLR LINKS that may appear in the notes if the note count is abnormally high.

Negatives

NB: I’m really sorry, but I have little understanding of the definition of verbs etc. in both English and French, so I’ll just example the hell out of this.

Negatives are very easy to use once you get your head around them. As long as you remember the grammatical pattern, they’re a doddle!

List of somewhat useful negatives

ne…pas – not

ne…jamais - never

ne…rien – nothing

ne…personne – no-one

ne…ni…ni – neither…nor…

ne…aucun – not one/not any

Unlike English, negatives use two parts, not just, for example, in English we’ll say “She never went out”, ‘never’ being the only negative. In French, however, we would say “Elle n’est jamais sortie”. Obviously ‘do not’ or ‘don’t’ is the exception.

In French, the negative wraps around the subject (or verb?) in the format “ne…pas”. As the subject normally begins with a vowel, it’s more common to see “ne” shortened to just “n’”, although both are grammatically correct (Like the ‘I am’/‘I’m’ and others in English).

One that most with a basic knowledge of French will know it “ne…pas” or “don’t”. For instance, “J’aime” (I like) can be turned into “Je n’aime pas” (I don’t like). But, of course, there are many other negatives, that can add emphasis to your work. For instance, “Je voudrais ne habiter pas ici” (I would not like to live there) is not as interesting as “Je voudrais ne habiter jamais ici” (I would never like to live there)

NB: Being the burning ball of confidence that I am, I would advise against using that example as I have written it as I am unsure of it.

One thing to note it that if a sentence is “Not anything” for example, you would not have to put “ne” in front of “pas” (A better example is the title of the French movie Rien á Declarer, or Nothing to Declare, which neglects to have a ‘ne’ at the beginning)

Also, an example for “ne…ni…ni…” could be “Je n’ai vu ni Pierre ni Paul au cinéma” (I saw neither Pierre nor Paul at the cinema).
